How to plan your engagement session
So you signed your contract and sent your retainer — congratulations! You’ve officially unlocked one of the most fun perks of booking with BWP: your complimentary engagement session. Before we dive into posing tips and outfit inspo, let’s walk through exactly how to plan, schedule, and make the most of this gift — because a little prep goes a long way toward gorgeous photos. What Is the Complimentary Engagement Session?
As a thank-you for your decisiveness, couples who sign their contract and send their retainer within 7 days receive a complimentary 30–45 minute engagement session, held within 30 minutes of Davis Square in Somerville, MA.
Think of it as your warm-up before the big day. It’s a relaxed, low-pressure session where you get to know how I work, get comfortable in front of the camera, and walk away with beautiful photos you can use for your save-the-dates, wedding website, and beyond.
Why does an engagement session matter? Getting in front of a camera before your wedding day helps you relax into being photographed — so on your wedding day, you’re not stiff or unsure where to look. You’ll already know the vibe, the pacing, and each other’s best angles. I help coach you to be the best version of yourself. We figure out what works for your dynamic and make the photos your own. That way, if we’re tight on time for the wedding day, we know we can work fast and make even 10 minutes count!
Make it yours. It’s also the best way to celebrate yourselves if your wedding is more traditional. If you have a second cultural outfit, why not have another chance to wear it and make it the focus of the photoshoot?
The #1 Mistake Couples Make: Waiting Too Long to Book
Here’s the thing that trips up a lot of couples: the session is a gift, but it still needs to be scheduled — and dates go fast.
Sessions are available Tuesday through Thursday only, and the studio calendar books up quickly, especially during peak engagement season (spring and fall).
I open my calendar to book portraits up to 2 months in advance. Only longer events/weddings can be booked with a longer horizon.
The sweet spot? Book your engagement session 1.5 to 2 months in advance. That gives us plenty of breathing room to find a date that works for your schedules, the season, and the light.
Just be flexible because Boston and New England weather isn’t predictable. If you’re also scheduling hair and makeup trials, you may want to figure this out with your artist. I’m fine shooting in the rain!
How to Schedule: A Simple Step-by-Step
- Reach out when my calendar opens 2 months prior to the month you’re considering. Don’t wait until you’ve figured out your location, your outfits, or your hair. Just get on the calendar first — you can sort the details after. You can feel free to reach out earlier to just make sure I’m available (I go on vacation or have training out of state so I just want you to have a sense of my availability if a specific month is on your mind).
- Propose 2–3 weekday options (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) that work for both of you.
- Confirm your location at least 2 weeks out (more on this below). This way I can plan logistics, parking, check the best time for light as the weather becomes more clear.
- Check the forecast in the days leading up — weather happens, and we’ll talk through what that means for you. I have a weather policy.
Where to Shoot: Location Tips for the Boston/Somerville Area
Sessions take place within 30 minutes of Davis Square, MA — which gives us a beautiful range of options across Somerville, Cambridge, Medford, Boston and surrounding neighborhoods.
The most important thing to consider when choosing a spot is…. what feels like you. Your location shouldn’t just be pretty, but meaningful. A first date spot? Love nature – let’s go for a hike. Love urban? Cityscapes sound perfect.
Popular Local Spots to Consider:
- Davis Square itself — brick sidewalks, charming storefronts, a quintessentially Somerville feel
- The Mystic River Reservation — open paths, waterfront views, lush greenery
- Tufts University campus — classic New England architecture and shaded walkways
- Fresh Pond Reservation (Cambridge) — wooded trails with gorgeous natural light
- Prospect Hill Park (Somerville) — elevated views of the Boston skyline
- Chinatown

- Porter Square/Cambridge neighborhoods — tree-lined streets and character-filled corners
- It also includes The Public Gardens, Charles MGH, North Point Park, and parts of downtown accesible by the T. If unclear, just reach out and ask.
- If you’re choosing something by the coast, just know we’re East Coast so sunrise is best for that over-the-ocean look. If you’re looking at West Coast inspo, their sunset photos would be the equivalent. This would mean Seaport, Rose Kennedy Garden.
The most important thing is that the location feels like you. So if you love coffee shops, let’s grab coffee. Love art? We can photograph outside the MFA or find some street art. Love architecture? Tell me what style and we’ll find that era! Many Boston date spots fall inside my coverage zone. If it’s not listed, just ask!
Your Location Checklist
Here’s something couples sometimes overlook: you are responsible for making sure your chosen location is ready for photos. That means before your session, please check:
- Is the area currently under construction or renovation? (Nothing kills a romantic photo like construction pylons and cordoned-off areas)
- Are there any closures, events, or permits required? (Some parks and public spaces require a photography permit. It’s quick to get, but you need to plan ahead.). Everyone loves the Boston Public Library, but there’s a fee to photograph there and it’s not insignificant. Don’t assume there’s no permit. For Boston purposes, it’s safer to assume any indoor space requires a permit to photograph there.
- Does the space look the way you’re envisioning? (Swing by in person, if you can, to make sure the vibe matches your mood board.)
- Is the beach closed due to horsefly season? Yup. That’s a thing. And every year couples ask me to photograph at the beach in July/August and North Shore beaches are infested. Want the beach? Think early or late in the season (before mid-June or after Labour Day weekend).
This is your session — you know what you want it to look like better than anyone. A quick scout visit goes a long way! And things change in Boston by the day, so it’s better to check closer to your scheduled date.
Rain, Reschedules & What Happens When the Weather Doesn’t Cooperate
New England weather is famously unpredictable, and we plan for that. If we need to reschedule due to weather, your rain date session may be offered as a sunrise timeslot. Sunrise sessions have a magic all their own — soft golden light, quiet streets, and a calm energy that makes for stunning photos. Many couples end up loving their sunrise reschedule even more than their original plan!

Flexible Options: Extending Your Session Options
The complimentary session is designed for locations within 30 minutes of Davis Square on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday — but we get it, sometimes life calls for a little more flexibility.
Here’s what’s available:
- Travelling a bit farther? If your dream location is just outside the standard coverage area, we can arrange an extended travel area for a minimum travel fee of $50.
- Need a weekend or holiday session? Life is busy, and weekdays don’t always work for everyone. Sessions can be upgraded to a sunrise on a weekend, Friday, or holiday for a flat fee of $1000, subject to availability. My weekends are very precious and limited as I am often out photographing weekends or spending time with my husband, who works regular office hours.
These options are offered at BWP’s discretion, so reach out early and we’ll do our best to make it work for you.
What to Wear: A Quick Style Guide for Boston and Davis Square-Area Sessions
Not sure what to wear for your engagement photos in Boston? You don’t need to stress about this — but a little thought goes a long way. Here’s what photographs beautifully in the Greater Boston/Somerville area:
- Coordinated, not matching. Pick a colour palette that complements each other rather than wearing identical outfits. Think: navy and blush, earth tones, or classic black and white.
- Avoid busy patterns and large logos. They distract from your faces, which are the whole point.
- Layer up for fall/winter sessions — chunky knits, scarves, and coats look gorgeous against New England foliage.
- Wear what feels like YOU. If you’re a jeans-and-flannel couple, own it. Authenticity always photographs better than stiff formality. Make sure it matches the location you’ve picked. If your location has a strong colour coding, make sure your outfits fit the palette.
- Ask me. I love to see what you have planned to wear. Send me photos of YOU and your partner in the outfits, and I can give feedback. Send pics during daylight hours so I can see colours and shape. i.e., don’t hide in an orange closet if you’re asking me for feedback on colours.
What works in the above photo? Their creams are similar and bring the look together. They don’t match exactly, but the textures and weights are similar. Neutral also helps them feel a part of nature, not fighting for attention. Imagine they wore hot pink, teal or purple? It just wouldn’t look the same.
How to Use Your Engagement Photos
Once your gallery is ready, the possibilities are genuinely fun:
- Save-the-dates — the classic use, and for good reason. A gorgeous engagement photo makes your save-the-date feel personal and special.
- Wedding website hero image — set the tone for your whole site with a photo that feels like you.
- Social media announcement — if you haven’t gone Instagram-official on the engagement yet, this is your moment.
- Guest book or cocktail hour display — a large canvas print at your cocktail hour is a personal touch guests love.
- Holiday cards — if the timing works out, engagement photos make for the best holiday card you’ve ever sent.
Answers to Common Questions
Can we bring our dog? Yes! Pets are welcome at most outdoor locations. Just check the specific park’s pet policy and make sure your furry co-star is comfortable on leash in a new environment. I recommend bringing a friend to walk your pup afterwards so that we can get some photos of just the two of you, so I can coach you on posing. With a pup, it’s basically working with a toddler so your pup will rule the photoshoot! Also, pups are notorious for showing me their butts instead of facing the camera as they want the treat, and they love you!
Do we need hair and makeup done? Totally up to you! Some couples love a full glam look, others prefer a natural style. What matters most is that you feel confident and like yourselves. If you’re booking hair and makeup, plan for it to be finished at least 60 minutes before our start time so you’re not rushing. Boston rush-hour is nutty.
What if we need to cancel or reschedule? Life happens — reach out as soon as you know. The earlier you communicate, the more options we have. Just keep in mind that dates fill quickly and we may not always have an exact replacement available on short notice.
