I’m honoured and truly humbled to be awarded Boston Magazine’s Best of Boston 2024 award! I’ve been at this craft for over a decade and at first it was just a girl with a camera responding to a Craigslist posting for a small intimate family elopement. That connection brought me to many others. I’ll forever be thankful to that wonderful human for taking a chance on someone who had 1 photoshoot on her portfolio of a small child and 1 photoshoot of some friends getting engaged. That’s it! I charged 50 bucks and put things on a DVD with a home printer. Now my name is listed as Boston’s best family photographer.
The last few years I took a step back from taking on volume because I was overworked and pulled in so many directions. I felt I wasn’t able to be creative and I wasn’t the artist I knew I could be. I struggled to combine my love of candid photography with knowing parents wanted that ‘unicorn’ smiling at the camera photo. I tried for a decade and sometimes it came easily, but more often than not…. kids just wanted to play! They wanted to smile in their parents’ arms. They wanted to be picked up and tossed. They wanted to revisit old places and play games with their mom and dad. They didn’t want to be smiling at this stranger who was making monkey noises in the park!
Once I realized my heart was no longer happy, I revamped my entire website to reflect my new style. It was no longer about smiling at the camera. My philosophy goes into more depth, but I wanted to be an observer. I didn’t want to control the session anymore. I didn’t want to give the same 5 prompts thereby resulting in repetitive images year in and year out. I wanted kids to explore. I wanted them to pick up those sticks and show their fancy rocks. I wanted them to hold their favourite stuffies. I wanted them to jump into puddles and twirl their hair. Many of my favourite photos on my website are totally unprompted. Kids being kids will always be the best!
My goal as a family photographer is to train everyone to come in with a plan only to be themselves. I want everyone to be open to see where the kids take us. Expect the unexpected, if you will! I won’t be doing ‘perfectly’ posed images. I won’t be asking them to cheese at the camera. I will not add stress. I will, however, chase them as they run towards the sunset, I will treat your session as a playdate, and I will always document the in-between moments that I treasure. I will allow for play, for discovery, and for them to express their emotions. Kids cannot misbehave.
If this low-pressure session style speaks to you, then you’re my kind of people. Please fill out my contact form for the quickest way to reach me. I have started to set boundaries with work so that my mental headspace is kept healthy for me to do my best work. I will only respond M-F within 1-2 business days (during office hours 10-5). Me burning out serves no one well. I want to be at my best to do my best. Creativity comes from a healthy mind and spirit!
