Why I don't do mini sessions for "one photo"

My work has a very editorial look. I am for classic, clean imagery that isn't heavily altered from real life.  My art is created through framing, composition, emotion and connection rather than props and trends.

Getting all the pricing details

I often get people write me saying they just want "one photo". Oftentimes it's just innocent. Many times I know that translates to "I don't want to pay your prices".

Yes, I understand you only want "one photo", but that doesn't mean that I can charge you less for that single image. It takes me an entire session to create images I'm proud of CONSISTENTLY.  I can easily fill my calendar with mini sessions. But that's not why I do what I do.  That doesn't make my heart happy.  My style is about seeing beauty in the everyday and everywhere. I use composition, light, posing and gentle direction to elevate my imagery. I want my imagery to be unique.

There's so much involved in my craft of experimentation and getting to know you and your family to get that "one photo" that I would be proud of and put my name to. I know I can't appeal to everyone. You will know if my style resonates with you or if it won't call out to you.

Below I take you through the process to get the images I love and what my families and couples want to see.

First 5 minutes:

Feeling out the kids, I knew they needed a break. You can see it in their eyes. They want to make mom & dad happy. They're great kids, but that's not what makes my heart sing and what I want for the families that choose me.

Below I take you through the process to get the images I love and what my families and couples want to see.

First 5 minutes:

It's the difference between the left image when you ASK a child to smile and the right image when you give them a reason to do so (I would never deliver the left image).

You get the idea.

I get that it might not be what you're looking for and that's ok. There's someone for everyone and the great thing about having choice.  This is what makes me happy - getting to know your family so that they feel comfortable enough to open up, show affection and to play.

If you want your kids interacting with YOU not with the camera then I'm your photographer. If you just want a single image for a holiday card and you don't care for the rest, then 100% you need to find someone that specializes in what you love. We would both be unhappy if we had a session together.  I do get the holiday card photo and individual photos of each child, but that's a byproduct of play and how I conduct my sessions. It's not the goal of my sessions. I warn my parents, sometimes it might not happen and they have to be OK with this.

Sometimes kids just have a bad day. As a professional photographer, I'm not a magician. I need time to recover or adapt if your child isn't having it. I love these as outtakes and the families that choose me put these on their holiday cards. It's real life.

However if I only had 10 minutes and this is ALL I produced, I have a feeling that I wouldn't have too many repeat clients. Forcing kids to smile in a short timeframe is a recipe for disaster. You'll show up possibly running late, your kid will have missed their nap, and they can sense when you are stressed. Inevitably, this is what will happen.

(This photo is about 6 years old, but left kid is losing it, right kid is attacking his brother and dad is trying to keep it all together).

So if you want a relaxing experience with time to allow your kids to warm up and room to explore, then I'm your photographer. If you're tired of forcing them to put down a stick which will generally guarantee pouts and tears, then I'm your photographer.  If you just want to get it done and over with, then I may not be your family photographer.

Be true to yourself.  Figure out what you want.  Here to help you make that decision if you need any guidance.

In order to remain flexible to families, I only book one session per sunrise or sunset. I don't stack a bunch of sessions. This allows me to adjust when I leave my home according to your baby's nap (within reason). The goal is to aim for great light and a happy baby. Just like how I might need to adjust your session up 20 minutes because it is overcast, I will adjust my schedule if your baby went down later than expected. I want to make sessions easy for us. These sessions are 100% child led. If I can be flexible, I will. The simple sessions and signature sessions allow for snacks/breaks/feeding if needed. I'll give you your space if you need to breastfeed, or will document it if it's important and part of your story. Every family is different, every child's need unique. I respect all of it. This is why I don't stack 10 families back to back. I allow grace for life's challenges.

perfection

you just have to treat my session as a play date

that i will do a ton of looking at the camera images

things will go wrong but we will pivot and recover. there is space and time for emotions, discovery and play.

Don't come in

this will be your typical family photoshoot. My style is about play and no stress. enjoy your family. relax. i'm just here to document that connection.

expecting

knowing

Here's the thing: I love the sentiment of everyone getting together and celebrating the joyous occasion of family get togethers. I know how important photos are because those are the memories you'll hold onto once the memories begin to fade.  What I don't like is everyone stressed out about outfits, running around last minute because people just flew into town and pleading with their kids to smile at the camera.

Guess what? Your kid may or may not smile at the camera. With the stress and pressure of the day, the odds are definitely against your children smiling for me.

My philosophy is about play - not that unicorn image of everyone smiling at the camera

why i don't offer extended family sessions
